Tones in the Voice of Shadows

all rights reserved © Arash Moori & Esther Mañas 2009

The installation 'Tones in the Voice of Shadows' from Esther Mañas and Arash Moori, situated in the former loading area of Leipzig’s central station, is shrouded in an unusual and almost ghostlike visual and acoustic effects: An empty and forgotten office space , scarred by traces of demolition and neglect, forms the stage for a scenery which the artists have re-animated with waving light and amplified sound. This quondam place is transformed into a temporary situation of experience speculating what happened within and after the erstwhile hustle and bustle, what occurred or disappeared – possibly also in the sense of Edgar Allan Poe from whom the title of the installation is taken:„And then did we start from our seats in horror, for the tones in the voice of the shadow were not the tones of any one being but a multitude of beings and the familiar accents of many thousand departed friends..."

IINSIDE THE BEEHIVE + DIGICULT INTERVIEW

A short video which documents our most recent work titled 'Inside the Beehive', which can be seen to follow on from previous works such as ' Composition for Five Rooms ' and 'Every Man and Woman is a Star'. A construction of a false corridor was made which became progressively destroyed/augmented, leading the viewers/listeners into a central chamber constructed from a hexangonal material. Elements found within the space contribute to the resulting soundtrack of the space, whose acoustical properties in turn alter through spatial exploration and investigation.
We exhibited the work in February at the fair ARCO09 Madrid with the help of Fundacion Arte y Derecho,Vegapand Galeria Ms .The work was situated within 'Expanded Box' which housed eight international projects selected by Italian contemporary art critic and curator Domenico Quaranta .
You can also find a recent interview we made with Marco Mancuso of Digicult in Aprils issue, currently only in Italian but there should be an english translation of the issue out soon.

Every Man and Woman is a Star

A quick update to let you know what we have been up to recently. It's been a really busy and enjoyable time for the both of us, as we had three exhibitions in different countries crammed into the space of just over one month. We started off in Liverpool at the Albert Dock's 'Site Gallery' where we installed a well recieved interactive light and sound sculpture titled 'Every Man and Woman is a Star', inspired by a quote taken from Aleister Crowley's 'The Book of the Law'(1909).
The second exhibition was a solo show hosted by the wonderful folks who run Candyland, they have recently expanded their Artist run activities to a larger industrial space in Stockholm called Hammarby ArtPort.Three solo show's were orchestrated to open simultaneously which included work by Paul Cullen(NZ) , Delphine Reist(CH) & Lauren Faulon(FR) and ourselves. We were given an empty office space consisting of five adjoining rooms to work within, installing microphones in the various rooms we amplified the sound of the lights electrical current with found speakers & amplifiers :) The electricity supply of the lights was interrupted intermitently creating a monstrous composition of random flickering light and sound.
Lastly we ended our triad of exhibitions at Teatro Valle-Inclan for La Noche en Blanco / White Nights. Where we installed 'Cada Hombre y Cada Mujer es Una Estrella/ Every Man and Woman is a Star'.

The installation was similar to our Liverpool work but much larger in size, accompanying the work were a number posters installed in the theatre space which greeted the public as they ascended to the window fronted second floor.
All in all we had an amazing month and would like to thank all those that helped us along the way.
